Video content is consuming mobile bandwidth at unprecedented rates due to the following trends:

• The number of mobile users is increasingly rapidly who now regularly play video – short and long play
• More powerful mobile devices such as Apple’s iPhone and laptops with wireless 3G dongles place greater bandwidth and processing demand upon a mobile network
• There is a global shift in professional and user-generated content production towards high-definition – leading to file bit rates in excess of several Mbps

As a consequence, 3G networks are coming under strain to the point where video traffic is outpacing the carrier’s ability to serve all forms of content without disrupting service along the way, which leads to dissatisfied customers and the need for faster than planned network expansion.

RipCode’s TransAct Optimizer empowers existing TransAct products to enable mobile operators to significantly reduce the amount of bandwidth consumed by mobile video devices including feature phones, smart phones, e.g., the Apple iPhone, and laptops with wireless-connect dongles – without adversely affecting end-user quality of experience.

As shown above, Optimizer can reduce video bandwidth consumption by as much as 60% with negligible impact to end-user playback experience. The network monitor widget to the right of each video shows a bandwidth delivery burst at the beginning of the playback, and the amount of bandwidth consumed to deliver the remaining content. Note the Un-Optimized video (left) has a larger and longer initial burst, as well as a significantly greater amount of average bandwidth consumed to deliver content vs. RipCode's Optimized version (right) - and yet, quality of experience is identical.
