Stream-to-Stream Transcoding

Breaking the bounds of the traditional living room television set, content is being streamed virtually everywhere over various wired and wireless networks. However, getting those streams out to the right format, resolution, frame rate and data rate can be a daunting task. Streaming transcoding requires ingesting many channels of content and transcoding into the many formats that are required to cover just a few of the most popular video-enabled mobile devices. Stream-to-stream transcoding requires a real-time transaction running 24/7 delivering high volumes of streaming media.

In the stream-to-stream workflow, incoming media streams over IP are detected by the RipCode V4 appliance. These streams are transcoded into various formats as specified by user-defined workflow definitions which can be one or many different transcodes performed by the RipCode V4. The transcoded streams are then sent to external streaming media servers as specified by outbound stream definitions. The streaming media servers then serve the content out to thousands of viewing devices requesting the content.

Stream-to-Stream Advantages Include:

Simultaneous, multi-channel support – Multiple streams at varying formats and data-rates can be generated from a single input stream. The RipCode V4 appliance also supports multiple stream inputs into a single RipCode V4 chassis.

Transcode Auto-Switching - The RipCode V4 appliance provides automatic workflow switching from file transcoding to real-time streaming without the need for user intervention. This allows the appliance to be used for file-to-file transcoding and prioritize live events instantaneously when needed. Once the event has concluded the RipCode V4 will automatically return to file-to-file transcoding.

Simultaneous Stream and File Transcoding - Since the RipCode V4 hardware architecture operates transcodes in high concurrency, the appliance will perform file transcoding using available processors not allocated for streaming transcoding.

Reliability -
The RipCode V4 appliance’s solid-state architecture requires no HDDs, eliminating a primary single point of failure. A single RipCode V4 can provide redundant streams or multiple RipCode V4’s can be set up for redundant streaming to a single or multiple streaming media servers.

Scalability -
Built on a robust, scalable and configurable multi-DSP platform, the RipCode V4 uses open architecture standards to support integration into mobile networks.
